DIY – Bug Spray

How is it Monday already? The weekends are just so precious and they seem to fly by so quickly. I woke up early this morning and I’m sitting on my couch enjoying some quiet time. It’s that special time when no one else in the house is awake yet and I get to just sit and sip on my cup of coffee and soak in a little grace before the day begins.

I have never been a morning person, but I’m trying. Really. Really. Trying. It definitely has it’s upsides. But anyways, that is another post for another day. Let’s talk about bugs, ok? That just sounds terrible, right? Well I wanted to share a something a little different with you today. You all right with that?

Now, I must make a personal disclaimer. I don’t use as many “all natural” products in my home as much as I would like. I buy certain organic products (at least when it comes to food items) but as of recent, bug spray has made it on the list to go natural and I don’t think I’ll ever go back!

I was recently introduced to essential oils through some friends and I went to go check out a DoTERRA essentials oils class with my SIL. Boy, we truly had no idea what we were about to get ourselves into! It’s an entire other world and one that I really have never been informed of. But after hearing about the incredible health benefits and realizing their limitless options, I dove head-first into this new world. (Again, probably another post, for another time!)

I wanted to really make practical use of the oils and I don’t know about you, but one of the most common issues we have around here are mosquitoes. We love to spend time in our backyard, but when these pesky things bite either me, my kiddos or my husband, they leave giant, itchy, red welts that last for hours. So I did a little research and found some good resources through Pinterest and the DoTERRA blog as well.

I only made a small one ounce bottle at first, since the cynic in me was still a little skeptical and I wanted to make sure it would work. And let me tell you – it worked! Here’s what you’ll need:

– 1 ounce glass spray bottle (I picked one up at my local health food grocer. I also found a neat site that has all kinds of bottles for great prices.)
– Lavender essential oil
– Melaleuca essential oil (What the heck is this? It’s tee tree oil, and it’s pretty amazing.)
– Peppermint essential oil
– 1 ounce of water

Pour one ounce of water into the bottle, then add 5 drops of each oil to it. Gently shake and spray it on! (Side benefit – it smells great and you don’t feel sticky like when you spray Off! or any other brand of mosquito spray on yourself.)

Now let me tell you the truly amazing part. My husband was sitting outside the other evening and even after spraying Off! all over his legs, the mosquitoes were still biting. So I brought out my tiny bottle, sprayed his legs and ankles and the pesky pests stayed away for the rest of the evening. I sprayed my feet too and was not bitten once. Pretty darn incredible if you ask me. More to come on these powerful little essentials. I’m hooked!
