What girl doesn’t love to play dress up? As a child, I loved sifting through my mom’s makeup drawer and I remember always jumping up and down to see if she would bring home the free gift with purchase so I could add the new goodies to my caboodle. It was the absolute ultimate.
My love of skincare and makeup has continued well into my adult years, and I finally upgraded from caboodle to Trish McEvoy planner, as you may recall. But one of the greatest ways to be inspired by new, fresh looks, color palettes and brands is by learning from the experts themselves! Today, I’ve asked Brittany Bell Spencer — my childhood friend turned fabulous NYC-based makeup artist — to join us on R&R for a quick Q&A. Big thanks to her for sharing these tips and tricks of the trade. Is she gorgeous or what?!
What is your everyday makeup routine?
My everyday routine is pretty simple. I rarely put on a full face of makeup for my everyday look — especially in the summer when it’s so hot!
I always start with a moisturizer that contains an SPF and maybe a little BB cream or some translucent powder on my T-zone. Next, I’ll fill in my brows a bit. This is perhaps the most tedious of my routine, but it really makes a difference. Groomed eyebrows frame the face and help you looked polished and manicured.
Then a little under-eye concealer and a touch of blush on the apples of my cheeks. I also always curl my lashes and add a few coats of mascara to make my eyes pop even without liner.
And finally a little lip color. I’m a lipstick fiend and this is the best way to really pull your look together. Plus, it’s fun! I usually have a few colors that I alternate in the summer: a bright pink, a coral and a glossy red.
Which makeup products could we find in your purse today?
Burt’s Bees lip balm, MAC moisturecover concealer, a bright lipstick — loving Revlon ColorBurst — plus liquid eyeliner for a touch-up or in case I’m going somewhere after work.
Any tips for transitioning makeup from daytime to evening?
LIPSTICK!! What can I say, I have a bit of an obsession. It really is the quickest way to get instantly glammed up. A classic red lip is the ultimate in fabulousness and sophistication. Believe it or not, there IS a shade of red for everyone. You just have to find the color that’s best for you! If you’re not comfortable with a bold lip, try throwing on some eyeliner. Anything that helps your features pop and makes you feel good!
Do you wash your makeup off at night or sleep with it on?
Absolutely wash it off! I hate going to sleep without cleansing and moisturizing before bed. I cannot stress enough how important it is to nurture and take care of your skin! Makeup can only do so much. Even if you’re amazing at creating a look with makeup, nothing is as beautiful as healthy skin. Take care of your mug!
What are your top 5 makeup tips to share with our readers?
1) Brows. First of all, don’t over-pluck, and don’t draw them on your face. Not only does a super thin brow look unnatural, it can also really age you and create a harsh appearance.
2) Drink water and take care of yourself. Sure, beauty products and makeup artists can make you look amazing. But there’s nothing more beautiful than a healthy, confident woman.
3) Master the art of putting on false eyelashes. I know is seems intimidating, but if you have an event you want to look really special for, falsies can take your look to the next level. Your eyes will pop, especially in photographs.
4) Less is more. You don’t need to wear a mask of makeup everyday. Let your natural beauty shine through — that’s what people really want to see.
5) BE ADVENTUROUS! Buy that dark red lipstick you’ve been wondering if you can pull off, wear that aqua eyeliner and say yes to a little glitter. You are as glamorous as you choose to be, and everyday is a new opportunity for you to experiment with your look. All women deserve to feel wonderful!
Do you have any favorite makeup products for spring and summer?
I’m really digging FACE Stockholm‘s fluorescent matte lipsticks this season. They’re so mod yet so classically inspired! Yes to Cucumbers Natural After-sun Serum. L’oreal Sublime Bronze Tinted Self-Tanning Lotion. Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral SPF. This stuff is the best. It’s basically zinc that you can quickly brush on your face, arms and chest without all of the mess of sunscreen — and it easily fits in your purse!
What are some products that you recommend our readers invest in vs. more affordable options?
As far as an investment goes, splurge on eyeshadows. Have you ever noticed how sometimes you buy a shadow and the color is so much more vibrant in the palette than on your actual eye?! So frustrating. I always suggest buying brands that are made for makeup artists. These colors usually contain more pigment and are richer in color. Brands like NARS, MAC, Bobbi Brown and FACE Stockholm are a few suggestions.
When it comes to mascara, I think drugstore buys are just as good as expensive brands. I would also spend a little more money on a better concealer… it lasts longer which means it conceals better. Lipstick fanatics get asked what their favorite lipstick brands are all the time. My favorite thrifty option is definitely Revlon. I love NARS as well and then my most coveted splurge has to be Chanel.
