My hubby’s birthday is on the Fourth of July and we always celebrate with a large family gathering complete with a BBQ and fireworks at the end of the evening. But somewhere in between, we squeeze in singing “Happy Birthday” to him and serve up a special treat.
While cake is the traditional go-to dessert, my husband is not partial to it and several years ago I transitioned from traditional cake to an ice cream cake and finally to a full blown make-your-own ice cream sundae bar – which has become popular with the kiddos and adults alike!
With this year’s July 4th bash being days away from my due date with baby #2, I didn’t quite have the time (or energy!) to plan an elaborate set up for his birthday like what I’ve dreamed of – so, for sanity’s sake, I created a simple and easy DIY station at the kitchen bar and everyone enjoyed customizing their creamy creations! Here are some of my favorite must-haves for a classic ice cream sundae.
You can always choose your own goodies depending on what your heart desires and it can be as simple as placing toppings in traditional sundae style bowls (like the ones above from Crate&Barrel). Or it can become an elaborate display that fits a party theme such as a bridal or baby shower or a child’s birthday party. If you plan to go this route, think ahead about your choice of toppings and select ones that will fit the color scheme of the party. This helps to tie everything together!
